Biographical Comparisons

One of the most interesting ways to understand a particular era in history is by doing a comparative study of several of the most important historical figures of that era.

During each marking period, you will have an opportunity to do just such a comparison as one of your independent study options. You will be asked to examine the lives and major contributions of each of these people and compare the effects that they had on their era and the legacy that they gave to those who followed.

During the 1st marking period, you will have two online activites:

  1. Three great Greek philosophers - Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle

In this exercise, you will be asked to do biographical research on each of the great Greek philosophers who are pictured above.  Click on each man's name below, then read the biographical information.

When you have finished reading about each of the men, write a couple of paragraphs in your packet, comparing the three philosophers.  Tell me of their main ideas, how they differed, and any similarities you see among them.

Complete this assignment over the weekend, and hand it in with your packet next Tuesday.

Here are the links:

    2. Three great Roman leaders - Julius Caesar, Caesar Augustus, and Tiberius

(details to follow shortly)

    3.   If you would prefer, you can visit Roman-Emperors.org  and do a short biography of any of the Roman Emperors you find there.  If you do this, follow the same instructions listed below under "Three Great Roman Leaders"".

Three Great Roman Leaders

      Julius Caesar              Caesar Augustus               Tiberius Caesar

Click on the picture of one of the great leaders depicted above.  Follow the hyperlink and read the profile.  Then write a short biographical summary of the man on the page provided in your chapter packet.

  Summarize the life, accomplishments, and main beliefs that drove this man to do what he did;

  What is it that this man did that made him a significant leader of Rome?

  You will hand this in with your final study packet of the marking period.
