How to Succeed in Global II Without Really Trying:

It can't be done. You have to try your best.  You have to work at it. And in the boxes below, I give you my advice on what you can do to increase your chances of succeeding.

     1. Do the DAILY work.

One of the biggest mistakes students make is letting everything go until the last minute. For example, a student doesn't read the chapter until the night before the chapter test. Or he doesn't do the guided reading review until just before the test. Or he doesn't do his independent study assignment until the day before it is due. Or he doesn't promptly make up work or tests that he has missed until the very end of the marking period.  I know this is partly human nature.  It is also the easiest way to get into academic trouble in Global Studies.

Don't copy the nightly homework. Do your own.

I give you a monthly calendar to encourage you to do the nightly work and keep pace with the classwork. If you do this, you will slowly master the material and your ability to remember key concepts and content will improve. When we do the review classes before chapter tests, they will truly be "review" for you and this reinforcement will serve you well on the next day's test.  The same cannot be said if our review class is the first time you have looked at the text.

Come and see me during flex time if you need extra help. Since I am often busy with my Technology Director duties, try to give me a day or two notice before you need to see me if you can. BTW, the first question I will ask you is "Have you been doing the nightly reading and guided reading review?" If the answer is "No", then there's not as much I can do to help you if you aren't willing to put in the effort yourself.

     2.  Take time to use the review materials before your semester exams.

This year for the first time, we have a full package of review materials available to you on the school's server (Knight0 - on the "y:" drive).  Before your semester exams, you can come to the Humanities Computer Center during flex times and try your hand at the review exercises and practice tests. (You can also do them for extra credit.) There is nothing terribly difficult about the content of Global Studies, but the sheer amount of material we cover in the text and in class can make semester exams more challenging.

There is always a lot going on at the end of each semester, so plan ahead to do some of these review exercises, and I'm sure you will reap the rewards of your efforts!
